The Traditional Beauty of Wooden Picket Fences
Wooden picket fences are useful, traditional and beautiful. The white picket fence is an image that is often associated with the perfect suburban family. If you want to install your own picket fence, you should know there are a variety of styles you can choose from. For example, you can choose a traditional picket style with dog-eared tops. This means the top of each picket is triangular in shape. Or, you may want to go for a flat top picket so that you can install decorative latticework on top. There are even decorative gothic style picket tops for a more sophisticated and elegant look.
As far as the color of your fence, there are also plenty of choices. While white is the oldest and most traditional choice, it is not the only one. White paint can look stunning against the background of a green lawn. Of course, you may want something a bit more natural. In that case, you may want to stick with the natural color of the wood. You will want to use a weatherproof varnish to protect the wood from the elements. Another option would be to choose a stain with a bit of natural color especially if the wood is very light or plain. Popular wood types for fences include spruce, redwood and cedar.
When installing your fence posts, they should be at least two feet underground for the best stability. With a depth like this, you don't need concrete. Instead, tamp some gravel into the hole and refill with dirt. Slope the dirt away from the fence post to allow rainwater to run away from the post rather than towards it. As far as your picket panels are concerned, you can buy pre-fabricated panels or install each picket one by one.
Wooden picket fences also make great boundaries for garden areas. You can use shorter pickets to surround most any garden area. You may want to coordinate the color of your garden fence to match your flowers. White and red are good choices for a garden fence. Of course, natural wood is also a great choice. Whether you install a picket fence to surround your property or simply to contain your flowers, you will love the charming look of this wooden fence style.
